Are you already a monk in your heart?
Are you already — or do you desire to become —
a Man or Woman of Prayer?
“Draw near to God,
and He will draw near to you.”
“The Lord is near to all that call upon Him,
to all that call upon Him in truth.
“This unction (anointing) is not the gift of genius.
It is not found in the halls of learning.
No eloquence can woo it.
No industry can win it.
No prelatical hands can confer it.
It is the gift of God — the signet set to his own messengers.
It is heaven’s knighthood
given to the chosen true and brave ones
who have sought this anointed honor
through many an hour
of tearful, wrestling prayer.”
–E.M. Bounds (1835-1913)
Author: “Power Through Prayer”
This website is the compilation of a quarter of a century of study and practice to find the best prayer practices and teaching on prayer from Scripture
and from all Christian Communions and eras.
No one could possibly practice all of them all of the time, but it is my hope that you will find one or more to bless you in your prayer life. Different ones may be a blessing to you at different times in your life.
Over the past twenty-five years I have personally experienced all of them in prayer to God at one time or another, often several at the same time, and in various combinations.
I have posted those I found most helpful, when joined with complete immersion in the Word of God, in fulfilling our one desire — to draw near to God.
For those who desire even more,
I have written three additional books. Clicking on the book covers at the bottom of this page will take you to webpages where you will find Excerpts from the books themselves, Reviews, Comments from readers, and their pages on Amazon.com, where they are available as Print Books or eBooks.
There are a little over 100 webpages on this Site, each containing theequivalent of three to six book pages.
If only one webpage is read each day, you will go through the entire website in about 3 1/2 months.
If you are new to the Site, and are like me, you will probably read through it all in just the next few weeks!
I have found it very helpful in my own walk with the Lord, to continue re-reading one webpage section each day, indefinitely. But as C.S. Lewis might say:
“If that seems like too much, try reading at least one section a week.”
I pray your journey as a Lay Monk with Jesus, spending time with the prayer teachings from the Bible and the greatest prayer teachers from all Christian Communions and Eras,
will be a blessing to you.
As much as it has been a blessing over the past twenty-five years to hundreds of thousands of others like yourselves, Christians throughout the world who have visited this website.
Those seeking to learn from our wonderful Spiritual Heritage of thousands of years of great Christian Teaching on Prayer, that we might experience the fulfillment of God’s Word in James 4:8 —
“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.”
As much as it has been a blessing
to Lay Monk Linda and myself.
A great contemporary man of prayer
has stated this truth so beautifully:
“As you and I both know, it is all Christ.”
Peace and all Good,
-Lay Monk S.G. Preston
We believe our Mission and Purpose: to help bring the Church into a deeper Life of Prayer, is one of the most important callings of our time; indeed, of any time.
Our objective is to help bring all individual Christians, regardless of Denominational or Church affiliation; whether Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic, or Protestant; into a closer walk with Christ,
through the Word of God and Prayer,
to the increase of the Gospel Message Worldwide.
Thank you for your Participation in this Ministry of Personal Prayer Growth and Global Gospel Witness through your prayers!
“No man can do me a truer kindness in this world
than to pray for me.”

“The best praying man is the man
who is most believingly familiar
with the promises of God.
After all, prayer is nothing
but taking God’s promises to him,
and saying to him, ‘Do as thou hast said.’
Prayer is the promise utilized.
A prayer which is not based on a promise
has no true foundation.”

“We should pray when we are in a praying mood,
for it would be sinful to neglect
so fair an opportunity.
________________________________________
We should pray when we are not in a proper mood,
for it would be dangerous to remain
in so unhealthy a condition.”

“If I feel myself disinclined to pray,
then is the time when I need to pray
more than ever.”
________________________________________
“When we cannot pray as we would,
it is good to pray as we can.”

“The Bible is not the light of the world,
it is the light of the Church.
But the world does not read the Bible,
the world reads Christians!
You are the light of the world.’”
