Celtic Lay Monks Visit the Canadian Rockies

View of Lake Louise (Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada).

The most photographed spot in Canada, located in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, near the border with British Columbia.

This photo was taken when Lay Monk Preston and Lay Monk Linda traveled here, canoeing near the Glacier, riding horses around the lake and up a steep mountain trail to a Teahouse hidden deep in the woods.  (A Photo of the Teahouse is posted in the Photo Carousel located further down this page.)

Their visit, and Lay Monk Linda’s runaway horse, are mentioned in Chapter 8.3Visiting the Canadian Rockies, of the book, Prayer as a Celtic Lay Monk: Learning from Celtic Christian Prayer.

“Before the mountains were brought forth,                                                                   or You had yet formed the earth and the world;                              even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.”

-Psalm 90:2

“Agus beimid inár n-aoirí, ar do shonsa, a Thiarna, ar do shonsa,
tá cumhacht tagtha anuas ó do lámh, ionas go gcomhlíonadh ár gcosa do thoil go tapaidh.  Sruthóimid ar aghaidh mar abhainn chugat, Agus plódaithe le hanamacha a bheidh sí go deo.”

“And Shepherds we shall be, for Thee my Lord, for Thee.                                                               Power hath descended from Thy Hand,                                                                      so our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command.                                                                 And we shall flow a river forth to thee,                                    and teeming with Souls shall it ever be.”

-Old Gaelic Hymn (Italian Franciscan Composer)

"yOur WORd HAVE i HiddEN in My HEARt..." -pSALM 119:11

“You have given me the shield of Your salvation.  Your right hand has upheld me; Your kind favor has made me great.”

-Psalm 18:35

The Joy of the Lord is Your Strength!

"We can never expect to grow in the likeness of our Lord unless we follow His example and give more time to communion with the Father.  A revival of real praying would produce a spiritual revolution."  -E.M. Bounds

“Colossians 3:23 is one of my favorite verses.  A verse to live by.”

-Lay Monk Preston

Skiing, and suddenly a blizzard, with almost no visibility of the drop-offs.
"And whatever you do, do it with all your might; in the Lord, and not for men;" -Colossians 3:23

“But we will devote ourselves continually to prayer,

and to the ministry of the word.”

-Acts 6:4

SAyiNGS Of tHE dESERt fAtHERS (fAStiNG & HOSpitAlLty):

“We traveled from Palestine to Egypt to visit one of the Desert Fathers.  He offered us hospitality.

We questioned him, ‘ Why do you not keep the fast when you have visitors?  In Palestine they do.

He answered, I can always fast, but I do not always have you here.

It is useful and necessary to fast, but we can choose to fast or not.  What God commands is perfect love.

I receive Christ in you, so I must do everything possible to serve you in love.

When you leave, I will continue my Rule of fasting.

‘The children of the Bridegroom cannot fast while the Bridegroom is with them; when He is taken away from them, then they will fast.'”
