of the Most High

He is my refuge and my fortress;
my God, in Him I will trust.”

-Psalm 91:1-2

Oh, this is a reality, not a fable, that the Lord Jesus Christ is our friend.

And we should not be satisfied till we are brought to this.”

George Muller’s life is a powerful answer to modern skepticism:

His name has become a by-word for faith throughout the world.Book Review: In the 1830’s he embarked upon an extraordinary adventure.

Disturbed by the faithlessness of the Church in general, he longed to have something to point to as “visible proof that our God and father is the same faithful creator he ever was.”

Praying in every penny of the costs, he supervised the building of five large orphanages housing thousands of children.

 Under no circumstances would any individual ever be asked for money or materials.

He was more successful than anyone could have believed possible and is as much an example to our generation as to his.

E.M. Bounds Writing About George Muller:

“The work of George Muller in Bristol, England , was a miracle of the nineteenth century.

It will take the opening of the books at the great Judgment Day to disclose all he wrought through prayer.

This Godly man never asked anyone for money for running expenses at his orphanage where hundreds of fatherless and motherless children were cared for.

His practice was always to ask God for just what was needed, and the answers which came to him read just like a record of apostolic times.

 He prayed for everything, and trusted implicitly to God to supply all his needs.

And it is amatter of record that never did he and the orphans ever lack for any good thing.”

Apostle of Faith

Born in Prussia in 1805, by age 10 George was inventing plans to embezzle the government monies his father had charge of.

His school years were years of drunkenness and immorality.  At age sixteen he was jailed for failing to pay his bills.

His Father had him enrolled in a Seminary, not due to any religious convictions, but because he thought George could earn a good living as a Minister.

George continued his life without God while studying for the ministry.

The University he attended had 900 Divinity students.  George said that there were only about nine who truly feared God.

George continued  living a sinful life until age 20, when he received Christ as his personal Lord and Savior.

George Müller (also spelled Mueller, Muller; 1805-1898), provided homes for 10,024 orphans during his lifetime, and established 117 Christian schools for 120,000 students.

In addition, Müller gave away millions of dollars to support other “faith missionaries” around the world, including Hudson Taylor, Founder of the China Inland Mission.

He also provided Bibles and religious literature to Missionaries worldwide.  By the time of Müller’s death, he had distributed 285,407 Bibles, 1,459,506 New Testaments, and 244,351 other religious texts, which were translated into twenty languages.

His work continues to this day.

But the amazing thing was that he did all this through prayer alone, without ever asking anyone other than God, or even making his needs known.

He received over $7,200,000 dollars (in 1800’s money!).

Müller recorded the date of every prayer request he made in Journals, and when they were answered he recorded that date, also.

During his lifetime he recorded over 50,000 answered prayers

In 1875, at the age of 70,  Müller  began a 17-year period of worldwide missionary outreach.  His language abilities allowed him to preach the Gospel in English, French, and German.

Continuing until the age of 86, he traveled over 200,000 miles ministering as an Evangelist in thirty-five countries.

George Müller (1805-1898) would live another six years in well-deserved retirement, to the age of 92.

"And the daughter of Pharaoh went down to wash herself at the river...and when she saw the basket among the reeds, she sent her maid to bring it." -Exodus 2:5
“My God sent His angel and shut the lions’ mouths, and they have not harmed me.” -Daniel 6:22 --- Painting: "Daniel Speaks to the King" by Breton Riviere (1840-1920).

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

For by it the elders obtained a good report.

Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts; and by it he being dead, yet speaks.

By faith Enoch was taken, that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had taken him; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God.

But without faith it is impossible to please Him: for those that draw near to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those that diligently seek Him.

By faith Noah, being warned by God of things not yet seen yet, moved with fear, prepared an Ark to the saving of his house; by which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.

By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should afterward receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing where he went.

By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise.

For he looked for a city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged Him faithful who had promised.

Therefore sprang there even from one, and him as good as dead, as many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore, innumerable.

These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded by them, and embraced them; and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

For those that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country.

And truly, if they had been thinking of the country which they had left, they would have had opportunity to return.

But they now desired a better country; that is, a heavenly one.

Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he has prepared for them a city.

By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac; he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son;

Of who it was said, that “in Isaac shall your descendants be traced.

Abraham considered that God was able to raise Isaac up, even from the dead; from which also he received him back, figuratively speaking.

By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come.

By faith Jacob, when he was a dying, blessed both the sons of Joseph; and worshipped, leaning upon the top of his staff.

By faith Joseph, when he died, made mention of the departing of the children of Israel; and gave commandment concerning his bones.

By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months by his parents, because they saw he was a beautiful child; and they were not afraid of the Pharaoh’s commandment.

By faith Moses, when he became of age, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter;

choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;

esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt; for he looked to the reward.

By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the Pharaoh: for he persevered, as though he could see Him who is invisible.

Through faith he kept the Passover, and the sprinkling of blood, so He that destroyed the firstborn would not touch them.

By faith they passed through the Red sea on dry land; which the Egyptians attempting to do, were drowned.

By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were circled around for seven days.

By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with those that did not believe, when she had  welcomed the spies in peace.

And what more shall I say?  For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephtha; of David also, and of Samuel, and of the prophets;

Who through faith subdued kingdoms, administered justice, obtained promises, shut the mouth of lions;

quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, grew valiant in fight, and turned to flight the armies of the aliens.

Women received their dead raised to life again; and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection.

And others had trials of cruel mocking and scourging, yes, moreover of bonds and imprisonment.

They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword;

they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, tormented: of these the world was not worthy.

They wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.

And these all, having were commended for their faith, yet without receiving the promise.

God having provided something better for us, that they should be made perfect together with us.”
